History and presentation

The art of goldsmithing and gilding began before Christ and flourished in the Baroque period. 15th century Vilnius was a major center of goldsmithing in Central and Eastern Europe. The products of the Vilnius goldsmiths did not differ in their form and artistic level from the production of the largest European centers of goldsmithing – Nuremberg, Augsburg, and the Hanseatic cities. The Goldsmiths Guild in Lithuania was founded 512 years ago. 1495 The Grand Duke Alexander approved the statute of the Vilnius goldsmiths’ workshop based on the example of Western Europe in a letter of privilege. The history of the Vilnius Goldsmiths Guild and its continuity is an important part of the general culture of the city. Currently, a group of talented and actively creative jewelers – goldsmiths – is working in Lithuania.

In order to preserve the traditions and creative forces of goldsmithing and to integrate into the cultural life of the city, in 2002 jeweler Marytė Gurevičienė and gallerist Diana Stomienė founded the Goldsmiths’ Guild Gallery “Meno niša”. In 2005, the gallery started organizing the International Biennale of Enamel Art “Vilnius 2005”, which is the most significant event in this field. The Goldsmith’s Guild Gallery “Art Niša” and the Lithuanian Institute have prepared a traveling exhibition “Jewelry in a suitcase”. It consists of the most mature works of Lithuanian jewellers.

The first “Jewellery Suitcase” exhibition was opened in 2004 in the prestigious “Trizio Caiti” gallery in the city of Bari, Italy. In 2006, the exhibition was already exhibited in the State Smolny Museum in St. in the museum, France, Morez; the gallery organizes group traditional metal art exhibitions “One gram of gold”, “You won’t be forbidden to live beautifully…”, “Clloissone from Georgia” – an exhibition of Georgian enamel art, etc. Personal exhibitions of famous Lithuanian and foreign jewelers are also held. The gallery is working and will host personal exhibitions of Solveiga and Alfredas Krivičiai, Marytė Dominaitė, Sigitas Virpilaitis, Adolfas Šaulys, Šarūnė Vaitkutė, Anna Fanigina (Latvia) and other famous jewelers.

In this gallery, you can not only see the latest works of Lithuanian professional artists, buy or order exclusive author’s jewelry, jewelry, enamel work, but also get detailed information about them.
